Another day working in Edinburgh’s newtown! We are building a dozen or so flats out of what used to be the Scottish Law Society Building.
I work right in the heart of Edinburgh, you can see the iconic Castle from some parts of the building. Today I found a newspaper from 1945 after pulling down an old wall.
Back in the day when a hole in a wall needed to be plastered they would support the inside of the hole with screwed up newspaper. The paper I am pulling out is exactly how it was when the the guy in 1945 screwed it up and stuffed it in there.
I could read around 3 or four stories. One was about how unpopular a President Farrell of Argentina was. Another was about how German POW’s weren’t being treated properly in US custody.
The wall I demolished was up on the top floor, the newspaper is dated October 13th, 1945. two months after world war 2. I know Edinburgh got bombed, sometimes 240 planes at a time. Maybe the building we are working on was one of the reconstruction projects? It’s only 2 months after the war ended! Not too far-fetched?
