Today in Bath I came across a classic british telephone box, you know the iconic red boxes that tourists like myself pose for photos in front of? yeah that one.
Well the notable thing about the one we saw today?
It was grey. Below is the plaque fixed to one side of it, helping explain the anomaly
The UK post office decided to hold a competition after their first telephone boxes were deemed lame. A guy called Sir Giles Gilbert Scott won the competition and recommended a grey exterior with a “greeny-blue” interior.
The color choice was overruled by the Post office! They wanted the bright red look that we know and love today. So the muted color I found in Bath was actually the post office caving to public pressure! (they snuck in the red window frames).
Now all of this is entertaining when you consider how much the city of Bath embrace color at this moment in time. Jess and I have been walking around bath for the last few days. taking photos of all of the springtime art installations. Color is the common thread 🙂
